Euthanasia of Animals
A common misconception about Euthanasia is that only human beings are 'subject' to the process. Fact, Euthanasia of animals is more common than the Euthanasia of humans.
Each year more than 7 million household pets are put into animal shelters. Like prisons, animal shelters become largely over-populated and the idea of returning pets to the streets is inhumane. More than 500,000 animals from shelters in North America alone are put to death each year because of overpopulation (and that does not include 'unwanted' zoo animals). Like Euthanasia in humans, there are legal ways and illegal ways. The proper way to euthanize animals is by delivering an intravenous injection of 'sodium pentobarbital' that makes the death of the animal instant and painless. But as one will tell, Not everyone follows that rule. Many shelters covertly kill the animals by using Lethan weapons like Guns or electrocution weapons, which is illegal in most countries. PETA, The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is strongly against the euthanization of animals in any abusive manner. The following video, Which is not illegal but found to be inhumane, shows a couple euthanizing their pet in their own home. |
Euthanasia Bills
In the year 2011, Romania had passed a law that permitted local shelters and local authorities to euthanize any stray dogs that were found to be wandering the streets with no tags. A few months later, in early 2012, the constitutional court ruled against it making it illegal. From 2001-2008 over 150,000 stray dogs were euthanized and still today, when it is illegal in Romania, the euthanization of strays continue. The video below that document horrific actions, was made in hopes to stop the euthanization of strays in Romania.
